Where Do I Start?

Congratulations! You are finally a Senior in High School. You have come a long way, but don't relax yet! Now as you think about college and other Senior things, you are probably thinking about how you are going to pay for it all. And if you aren't then you should be! Well this book is for you, to help you get started on it. While it won't fill out all of those applications or write your essays, it should give you a good idea of what you should be looking for, whether in the big intimidating filing cabinet or out in the community.

The selections in this book should be arranged in the order that they will appear in the Counseling Center throughout your Senior year. Each entry will have a few bits of information to help you get started:

o NAME (What the scholarship is called, and any abbreviations that could be used in the filing cabinet!)

o DATE (Approximately the month or week that the scholarship will become available.)

o CRITERIA (This tells you if there are any special requirements necessary even to apply for the scholarship.

o DESCRIPTION (This section will tell you what you have to do for the scholarship, like how many letters you need, essays to write, and so on.)

o AMOUNT (How much you will get if you earn it!)

o DUE (When the scholarship has to be in, and when you will hear if you got it or not!)

Remember, these descriptions will only be as current as the previous school year, so some of the information could have changed between the printings of these books. A reminder of this will appear at the bottom of every page, including this one. There is no substitute for looking at all of the scholarship applications yourself in the Counseling Center!

Ten Tips for a Winning Scholarship Application!

Wait! Before you go filling out all of those scholarships.here are some important things that you should remember.

1. Apply Only If You Are Eligible.

Read all the scholarship requirements and directions carefully and make sure that you are eligible. Your application will be filled out for nothing if you don't qualify. But remember, if you are in any way eligible for the scholarship, you should apply. Just remember that.

2. Complete The Application In Full.

It may seem pretty simple, but be sure to complete the entire application. If any question does not apply to you, say that! Do not just leave it blank.

3. Follow Directions.

Provide everything that is required. Many scholarship applications will grade you on your ability to follow directions, so do not miss the fine print!

4. Neatness Counts!

Make some copies of your applications to work on before you type on the actual application. Always type your scholarship applications if you can, but if you have to print, use a pen and make it legible!

5. Make Sure Your Essay Makes An Impression.

Scholarship committees may see hundreds of applications when making their decisions. Your essay needs to stand out in the crowd. The best way to do this is to use personal experiences and concrete details to make your experiences come alive to the readers: the "who," "what," "where," and "when" of your topic. The simplest experiences can be outstanding if you honestly present how you were affected! Most importantly, save your essays, because you may be able to use them more than once.

6. Watch For Deadlines.

There is nothing more frustrating than to work hard on an application only to miss the deadline. Set a time for yourself at least one week before the printed deadline to proofread and mail your application. In the worst case scenario, you could call the scholarship provider in advance to request an extension, however very few scholarships allow late applications, so get started early!

7. Make Sure Your Application Gets Where It Needs To Go!

Before you mail your application, make a copy of it in its entirety, just in case it gets lost in the mail. That way it can be easily reproduced with little to no difficulty. If you have attachments, make sure that your name and social security number appear on each page, just in case.

8. Give It A Final "Once Over."

Proofread your entire application carefully, or have someone else do it for you. Look especially for spelling or grammatical errors!

9. Ask For Help If You Need It.

If you have problems or do not understand a portion of the application, do not hesitate to call the organization or see your counselor, as they are happy to help you.

10. Remember - Your Scholarship Application Represents YOU!

Your ability to submit a neat, timely, complete application reflects on you. Take pride in yourself by submitting the best application that you can.

Financial Aid Sources and Other Resources

Remember, there are a lot more sources of scholarship aid than what is listed on the following pages. Check everywhere, because the corner store, the bank, and you or your parents' place of employment may have scholarships available for employees, customers, or family members! Also, there are many scholarships that are available through FREE internet sites such as these listed below.

FastWeb

This is one of the easiest ways to seek out scholarships that are right for you! After filling out a short form with your interests and college preferences, the FastWeb scholarship service will seek out all of the scholarships that you qualify for, and periodically e-mail you with applications and information. You never have to leave your computer!

Wired Scholar

Another system similar to FastWeb with millions of scholarships ready to be given away. Again, you never have to leave your computer, but start searching early!
